A Quilt for Lan

This queen size quilt was made April 2012.  It was my very first queen size quilt making experience.  I set off to challenge myself to make a simple queen size quilt because I wanted to expand my quilting repertoire.  The thought of making a queen size quilt was at first overwhelming and fearful but as the process went along, it was not a 'big deal' as I have thought it would be.

As Eleanor Roosevelt said "You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.  You must do the thing which you think you cannot do."

The most trying part of the queen size quilting journey was the hand quilting which took a lot of perseverance and patience.  It was worth it at the end seeing the finished quilt, and even more rewarding seeing the smile on Lan's face when she received it.

And now is the right time

Sabela's quilt

This quilt was made for Ursula's first child, and you might say my very first 'professional' quilt making experience.  In the past, I had made a few quilts for friend's first born (sadly I never took any photos of them) which were some what haphazard, out of alignment, occasionally frustrating and long and tedious experience.  No doubt they were beautiful in their own right and loved by my friend's kids but I never really 'invested' in them until this very quilt made for beautiful Sabela.  I suspect that these 'experimental' quilts that I had made over the years before embarking on this quilting journey were slow gentle driving forces behind my love for quilting making now. 

This quilt was made during the early winter month of July 2011.  I remembered having spent all my free time and energy on this quilt because at that stage, I was having some relationship problems with a man from a distant land.  This quilt kept me company from those 'not so good' days, and it cheered me up seeing each pieces of fabric being stitched and bind together to form a completed quilt.  Besides picking up basic techniques and skills on quilt making, every process from choosing the color palette, backing fabric, types of batting down to the binding taught me that life was all about choices.  I don't like to think that there are good or bad choices,  just choices we have made or are going to make for experiences we need in our life to shape and grow into who we are today and want to become.
